This is a project I started with pianist Linda Papatopoli to create an anthology of Japanese art songs with piano accompaniment for singers who do not speak Japanese. Some of these songs are extremely beautiful and can be sung classically, but they are not well-known outside of the country. We think that it is because of the language barrier. The new anthology will include English translations, short descriptions, and pronunciation of the Japanese words transcribed in IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet).
We had our first concert on January 2nd, 2012 at the Kaji Aso Studio in Boston, MA, where we introduced seven Japanese art songs. Our second concert took place on November 14th, 2014 at the Democracy Center in Cambridge, MA. Some of the songs that were performed will be included in the first book of the anthology. The songs performed in the two concerts were:
茶摘 Chatsumi (Tea-picking song)
故郷 Furusato (Motherland)
浜辺の歌 Hamabe No Uta (Song of the Seashore)
浜千鳥 Hamachidori (Sea Plover)
かなりや Kanariya (Canary)
赤い靴 Akai Kutsu (Red Shoes)
青い目の人形 Aoi Me No Ningyou (Blue-eyed Doll)
花嫁人形 Hanayome Ningyou (Bride Doll)
七つの子 Nanatsu No Ko (Baby Crows)
赤とんぼ Akatombo (Dragonfly)
Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding the songs and the project.
